Kurunegala, the capital of the North Western Province, Sri Lanka, is a busy commercial hub and is situated  about 94 km from Colombo. Set amidst  coconut plantations and rubber estates  Kurunegala stands out for its huge rocks that rise from the plain below. These rock formations have characteristic names, mostly representing animals that they are imagined to represent.  The largest among them is Ethagala or the "Elephant Rock" , which resembles an elephant in its shape and towers 316 meters above the town.
