Kitulgala is a small town in the west of Sri Lanka, which falls in the  wet zone rain forest, making it one of the wettest places in the island nation  Kitulgala is also a base for white-water rafting, which starts a few kilometres upstream and  draws many nature enthusiasts and adventure sports lovers.

It was the location of the fabled film, "The Bridge over the River Kwai" in the 1950s. This sleepy town has not changed much since the filming. It is a great place to be in for birdwatching and nature trails as well.
