Maduru Oya National Park Hotels
The remote Maduru Oya national park, located along the road inland from Batticaloa to Mahiyangana was set up in 1983 to protect the catchment areas of the massive Maduru Oya reservoir. Over 15% of the 50,000 hectares park is made up of water bodies and is rich in animal life including elephants, sloth bears, abundant bird life and even the elusive leopards. Maduru Oya National Park spreads across the three districts of Polonnaruwa, Badulla and Ampara. Ancient Buddha statues are found within the park and is an archaeological spot as well. This national park is quite popular among the bird watchers for its thriving aquatic bird population. Mostly covered by open grasslands, this park offers the visitors a great view of the animals; yet it remains uncrowded unlike some of the other national parks in Sri lanka.
