North of Colombo
From the airport most eyes look South towards the resorts and Galle. But turn North and you enter a different Sri Lanka that is less visited and the more interesting for that.

South of Colombo
South of Colombo is free from the bustle and mayhem of the capital city of Colombo. There are big and small beach towns like Wadduwa and Hikkaduwa along the coast that it should be fairly easy for you to find a cove or a strip of sand that suits your needs.
There are handy accommodation options of all possible sizes and budgets and hotels are well marked with signposts along the road. Most tourists stop by the many Ayurvedic health centres here. The Galle Road (A2) from Colombo is motorable and well maintained but the many arterial roads that lead from it are in bad shape.
